How we formed — by Norma

I founded The Way Out Society in September 1976. The reason was that I suffered from Agoraphobia for five years from 1956 to 1961.

In those days there was little help, if any! I liken it to a commando course, trying to overcome dreadful panic attacks and the isolation of never meeting anyone else who understood what it really was.

As the years passed after my recovery which involved a lot of determination despite many setbacks, I felt that I had to do something to try to help others who suffered from this debilitating condition. Hence the beginning of The Way Out Society, a registered charity, and now after 33 years we welcome people of any age who suffer from any phobia, anxiety, depression or stress etc.

We are basically a self help support group and are not f unded by any authority although we are recognised by Social Services and the NHS, also GPs by referrals.

We meet every fortnight in Norwich.
